So there had to be a calculus behind Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ deal with the Devil to debate California State Governor Gavin Newsome. Of course, the situation changed over time as well. DeSantis is singularly versed on strong policy statements as well as singularly taciturn.
We know DeSantis’ campaign failed to catch on.
Also Newsome wants to become a Presidential candidate if not this election then the next one .
You would think Newsome had more to gain in the form of political capital than did DeSantis. And he did.
To evaluate the upside let’s first start with the downside. DeSantis “losing the debate” would have pretty much ended his campaign, which died shortly after in any case. Newsome really had no downside. That is, if you had considered some Democrats would watch and realize how vacuous his policies are; only more so than his accomplishments. Of which, really there are none.
